Photography Tips

Cameras are clever things. Not only can they record a precious moment in a fraction of a second, they can also capture what the naked eye can’t see. For example, have you ever seen a photo where the water has been blurred so much it resembles soft cotton wool? That’s because the photographer has used a longer shutter speed – in other words, the camera’s ‘eye’ was open for longer – to capture a greater sense of movement. In our example image, you can see that the water hasn’t recorded as individual droplets. Rather, it looks like blurred streaks, which gives the shot a greater dynamic. To achieve this effect, switch your camera to shutter-priority mode (S or Tv on a mode dial or menu), as this allows you to control shutter speed while the camera calculates the most suitable aperture. Make sure your camera is mounted on a tripod or supported by a firm surface to remove any chance of blurred images, and select a shutter speed of 1/60sec or slower – our example was shot at 1/50sec. You can use this technique to blur traffic headlights, people running, even stars moving across the night sky, so experiment and have fun.
