Photography Tips

Light is the single most important ingredient when taking photos and can be the difference between an average snap and a potential award-winner. There are times of day when light is almost guaranteed to be harsh and unflattering – the middle of the day, for instance – and this is best avoided if at all possible. There are also times of the day when light is likely to be much more flattering. Photographers often refer to the golden hours – the hours around sunrise and sunset – as these can offer a warmer, subtler quality of light if conditions are right. The sun will be lower in the sky too, which softens the shadows and can add definition to your subject, with interesting highlights and catchlights. Take a look at our photo of Oliver Cromwell – it’s positively glistening in the warm evening light. Just keep an eye on your exposure and always review your images on the LCD screen – if you can see areas of blown highlights, you may need to dial in some exposure compensation to bring the detail back.
