Photography Tips

The temptation is always to go trigger-happy and point and shoot at anything and everything. Ooh, there’s a derelict house. Snap. Ah, a gnarly old tree. Snap. And no doubt these images will be great reminders of a brilliant day out. But as photos they may not be the best, as you rushed the creative process and didn’t consider things like composition and viewpoint as much as you could have. The trick is to know when to slow down and look for features in the scene that will give your shot that extra ounce of impact. Lead-in lines are a great example. Study this shot and look at how the lines in the foreground encourage the eye to follow them into the scene beyond. Effective lead-in lines can add depth to your shots and allow the viewer to explore. They can even be used to draw attention to a scene’s focal point, in this instance the derelict miner’s cottage. Getting down low will bring the viewer’s eye closer to the lead-in lines and give your shot a more intimate feel, almost as if they’re part of the landscape, so explore your viewpoint (the camera’s height and angle) if you have time.
