Photography Tips

Light is a photographer’s greatest weapon. It can bring a scene to life by adding atmosphere and drama, and it can be harnessed and controlled to create works of art worthy of hanging on the wall. If there’s a secret to good photography, this is it! Time of day plays a huge part, assuming you’re shooting outdoors, as does the position of the light and the photographer’s viewpoint (the camera’s height and angle). Backlighting is especially powerful, as our example shows. As you can tell from the fisherman’s crisp shadow, the camera was pointed towards with the sun, with the actual light source kept just out of the frame. The photographer used his hands to shield the top of the lens and act as a makeshift sunshade, limiting the amount of flair. This kind of lighting can add real luminance and impact to a scene. It might also fool your metering system into underexposing i.e. capturing a shot that’s too dark. If this is the case, you’ll need to locate your camera’s exposure compensation controls. These allow you to compensate for this underexposure, and in these conditions you’ll need to dial in +1 or +2 stops of extra light.
